I was like a kid at Christmas waiting for my 34C to arrive today. Of course I ripped the box open with great abandon, and I was initially underwhelmed. The razor looks...OK. I normally use a Razorock Mission daily and maybe once or twice a week, I use a Parker A1R travel razor....both of which are heftier and much more aggressive than the 34C. Still excited, I popped in a new Feather and whipped up some MWF. First pass was really good. Second pass was great! But I did my usual 4 passes. The 34C is a VERY smooth and mild shave, and the engineering of the head really shines through. Totally precise. However, 30 minutes after shaving, I had to fight to keep myself from shaving again. Wow. Not really very clean. I'll keep using it, because it is pleasant, and I want to give it a fair shake. Also the knurling isn't as deep as my other two razors, so it can get a little slippery in the hand. If I can't get BBS with a Feather blade and Mitchell's Wool Fat after 4 passes, I can't justify more than 3 stars. Very good beginner's razor.

I have now used this razor for a year. Last month, though, I returned to my Gillette Mach 3 just to refresh my memory and to better compare the two razors. I now feel very certain that I prefer to shave with the Merkur. The Merkur shaves closer and really leaves my face feeling so much nicer than does the Mach 3. The Mach 3 leaves my face feeling itchy and tight and even causes me to break out, but with the Merkur, I have none of those problems. The Merkur also shaves my side-burn area more precisely than does the Mach 3. The cost, too, of using the Merkur is far less than than that of the Mach 3. My beard is relatively fine and soft, and I can shave with one razor blade for at least a couple of months using the Merkur (I'd shave for 3-4 weeks with one cartridge using the Mach 3). The Merkur did require some getting used to, but it has definitely been one of my wiser investments. I also love how the Merkur enables me to shave longer hair more easily (a Mach 3 cartridge clogs up fairly easily on me when I wait a while between shaves). Who knew I could do better than the Gillette Mach 3? I'm so thankful I gave the Merkur a shot, though; it's clearly the winner!

I would really recommend this razor. It has a great feel to it. It is nice and heavy so its really easy to use since the weight of it allows you to apply the lightest amount of pressure and it does the rest. I would say that it does have a small handle but I think that actually makes it better because of the balanced weight making it easier to use. Also mine came with one Merkur blade.

I've been a DE shaver for years with inherited razor and Kroger blades before I was brought up to snuff on the stuff available now. Put this dandy on my Xmas list and test drove it this morning with the sample blade provided (can't wait to try it with a feather!) and was very impressed with the performance and feel of this product. You can't go wrong with German quality!

Amazing razor! I recently ordered this razor after doing endless amounts of reviews on safety razors. I finally found this one and decided I would give it a try. Extremely glad I did! Great build, great feel, very versatile. Everything about this razor screams perfection! The price is very reasonable and its something on this planet that is not made in China. German made, so you know its tough! Es ist sehr gut! Ich liebe es.

I own the 34C HD, 33C, 38C and EJ DE89L. This is my favorite DE razor, hands down!! Perfect size, weight and balance and shaves like a champ, even with your run-of-the-mill Derby blades. A must have. If you can only buy one, buy this one.

This was my first safety razor and I haven't turned back since. Since this one, I've gotten the Edwin Jagger and have been using both, but I really prefer the Merkur 34C because of the weight. I was a little disappointed when I first got it because I thought, "how am I going to hold this tiny little thing" but I've been holding the razor near the head anyways so the length of the razor doesn't even matter to me! Love this razor!

So i now own 2 safety Razors, I own a Merkur 1904 42c, and this one. Let me tell you that both are great, but the weight of this one gave me the closest shave ever. Now i'm still a rookie when it comes to using a safety razor, but i had minimal irritation. It was VERY easy to use. I would def recommend this razor to the beginner and the expert alike. Thanks Royal shave for great service and speedy delivery.

After many years of wet shaving with plastic razors, I made the switch to the 34C. What a joy to use! I watched a couple of YouTube videos on correct shaving techniques, including proper beard prep and the result is a super close shave. This razor is recommended on many forums and I understand why. It's well balanced, a simple design, and reasonably priced. Its a pleasure to own something that is built to last versus build for disposal. My compliments to Royal Shave, they shipped really fast.

Reviewer: K. McGovern (Twinsburg, OH)

Had this puppy almost six weeks now. some thoughts for those who are converting from their five-blade plastic toys: This remains a fine tool for its purpose: shaving the human phiz. The chrome plating is the best I've ever seen and nothing has come loose or otherwise disappointed me with the razor. I was given a 33C (longer, slightly lighter-weight handle) and I returned it. You just can't beat this classic razor! Polishes up wonderfully when it builds up soap residue. In use I have learned(even though the Old Hands keep telling us newbies about it) that a reeeeeeally light touch is needed with these weapons. With the cartridge razors, we tended to hack away with abandon, now using a Real Man's Razor, you need to be very careful! Be fussy with the pre and post shave procedures and life will be good. Blade of choice is now Wilkinson Sword as recommended by the cognoscenti. I've had the most luck with Prorazo Green (great on a sluggish morning), Taylor's of Old Bond Street Cream & Talc (truly Deluxe stuff) and Mitchells Wool Fat Soap (best bet to start with if this is your first time with DE shaving. Slippery, smooth, clean; buy the puck and use a large coffee mug, plenty of warm water and a boar bristle brush for best results. The Wal-Mart brush works great and will break in with about three shaves with Mitchell's). Wonderful razor! See below if you're really nuts! Something I note about the way it holds blades is that it's quite precise and you can see a lot about blade manufacture with the razor: A more "aggressive" blade often is visibly just a teeny bit wider than a "milder" blade. So a Feather juts out from the razor a very small--but noticable--amount than a Derby. Also, not all blades are completely orthagonal--meaning edges aren't precisely parallel, giving a kind of slant shave, not unlike the Merkur Slant shaving heads which do it deliberately. I can't say if these differences are designed into the blades themselves, or are the result of varying manufacturer's tolerences, but the precision of this razor is such that you can see them.

I can't add more than has already been said, it's all on the level. Razor came from Royal Shave as advertised, though I thought the Merkur box on the cheap side, but that's all I could gripe about... Razor is as described: well made, simple to use, built to last. I have yet to find The Best Blade For Me, but it's a work in progress. I founf the Merkur blade a bit harsh, but that may have just been technique. Trying some Wilkinson Swords and have been persuaded to try some Feathers and maybe Derbys; will report back here. I have an average beard and skin type, though my beard grows strangely, so getting that ABS (per Data) is not easy. I have found Proraso and/or the C. O. Bigelow (via Bath & Body) are the best out there for my average phiz, slight pref for the Bigelow. Bought a Duke #1 Simpson's brush to replace my aging Wal-Mart boar bristle and it's the shiz-nits! YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS RAZOR!

If you still shave with a disposable or one of those 5-bladed monstrosities, please do yourself a favor and just look up any one of the many videos out there of people shaving with double edge razors. You want a baby-butt smooth shave? And NO, you are not getting one now. Get the shave soap and a proper brush. Get the feather blades. Get the Merkur. Get an old school aftershave balm like Geo Trumper sandalwood. You'll friggin love it. I'm not kidding.

Reviewer: Joe (Topeka, Kansas)

I love my dad, but when he taught me to shave about 17 years ago, he taught me with a multi blade razor. It provided an adequate shave, but also left me with ingrown hairs. After receiving a proper shave at a men's salon as a groomsman gift, I had to make the switch. I've been shaving with this razor for a month now, and experimenting with different blades and creams. I have found some that work for my face better than others, but one thing they have in common is the incredible shave they provide. After being plagued for years with ingrown hairs, I am now enjoying much healthier looking and feeling skin, thanks to this style of shaving. Ditch the multi blade razors, and get yourself a DE razor and shaving brush. Shaving used to be a chore, and now I actually look forward to my shaving ritual in the morning.

After being a blind follower of modern-day marketing campaigns for every single multi-blade cartridge razor out there, I found (by accident) double edge wet shaving videos on youtube. Desperate to find something that would stop tearing my face to shreds I reluctantly gave this razor a try. It is, in a word, marvelous, and I am talking not just about the razor itself but the entire wet-shaving process. I have probably the world's most sensitive skin and for a while I had to resort to electric shaving because the multi-blade garbage out there completely destroyed my face. Do yourself a favor: find your nearest trash can and throw your current Mach 3, 5, or 25 in there and buy one of these razors along with a SILVER TIP badger brush and a high quality shave cream from this site. Watch a few videos of how to get your technique down. TAKE YOUR TIME and shave with this razor and a Merkur blade. The silky flow of this razor across your face is something like a dream. Use the lightest touch, it's all you need. My son is only 3 and I am already putting together his shaving starter kit which will contain this razor. No one should ever have to suffer dragging a cheaply made, overly-priced piece of junk down their face again when something as wonderful as this exists. This has been one of the most worthwhile investments I've ever made my entire life. Very, very highly recommended to all guys out there.

I used to shave with a DE and brush and creme from Boots The Chemist when I lived in England in my early 20's. Somehow, I was seduced by the Gillette multi-blade sets. I have recently purchased the Merkur 34c and I love it. Experimenting with various cremes and soaps (Proraso, Cella) and blades (Merkur and Israeli Crystal). No clear favorites, but I'm having fun trying them. Should have done this eons ago. I get such a close, comfortable shave with this razor. No irritation. Well built. Highly recommended.

I bought this razor about a month ago and I really like it. Kinda nervous at first, thought I would really cut myself up. Not a single scratch so far. My girlfriend loves it, says my shave is 10x better than all the other shaving blades I've tried. Shaving is a little slower but a lot more fun. I have a heavy beard and should have done this a long time. Still experimenting with various blades, but so far the Merkur refills are the best. Easy to use, comfortable in my hand, fantastic results, really worth a try. Not the cheapest, but very affordable...

I recieved my 34c today and i went 3 days without shaving for the occasion. While i was waiting for it to come in the mail i watched youtube vids on how to shave with a DE that way i had an idea how to use it instead of goin in without an idea and hack my face up. All i can say about the Merkur 34C is wow!. This is my first time using it and i had zero razor burn. Thats a huge statement considering i have very sensitive skin. I nicked myself a couple times but that was because i dont have the technique quite all the way yet. Im 21 and im proud i discovered this lost art of shaving rather than being 30-40 and have gone all that time with a cartridge razor. Goodbye fusion proglide, never again. This is just my first time shaving with the Merkur and it just gave me the best shave ever. A good lather and solid technique is key with the merkur. AMAZING!!!
