This Merkur razor was dubbed Progress for its
inception of an adjustable blade into a classic design.
With a twist-handle that calibrates several settings

Recently I decided to give wet shaving a try. I purchased this razor and several other items from RoyalShave.com. The order went through without any problems and several days later my items were delivered. I will definitely order from them again.
As this is my first DE razor, the learning curve is high for me. After using this razor for about a week now I am already getting great shaves with it. My only complaint is that I have trouble installing the blade where it is even and straight on both sides. Even after getting the blade installed the top seems to twist slightly when I turn the adjustment knob. It seems as though I'm constantly fidgeting with the blade and head to keep everything straight. Since this is my first DE razor, and an adjustable at that, I don't know if this is common or not. I’m pleased with the shave that I’m getting and I love the feel of this razor, the reason I only gave it 3 stars is because of the problems I have getting and keeping the blade aligned.

Having a very tough, fast growing beard, I had it with the modern crop of disposable head razors. My grandfathers old DE razor had broken years ago, and I was tired of spending more and more money on disposables. I needed a new DE badly!
After trying the Progress, I found my every day razor. Setting 2-3 is usually as aggressive as I need, higher settings are good if I let it grow for a couple of days.
This is a very high quality unit, and I HIGHLY recommend it for the first time DE user. You won't regret it. |

I am a DE razor collector and own more than 75 razors. Merkur is clearly the gold standard. I have a Progress, 37C Slant, 34C HD and a Barber Pole. Each one of them has very distinct advantages depending how you feel in the morning.
The Progress is very efficient up to the a setting of 4 as I have a tough beard. When I push it to 4.5 to 5 it is a somewhat harsher shave.
I generally use Feather or Kai Japanese blades but I find the Progress works best for me using the Turkish Derby blades. I don't like the Merkur blades at all as I find them to be on the dull side comparing them to almost any other premium blade.
If you have a normal beard I believe you would be better off with the 34C or the Barber Pole. The Slant is scary on a good day but I shave with it at least once a week. These three are also excellent for a tougher beard as well.
Bottom line you can't go wrong with the Progress and you might even like it enough to make it your everyday shave. I sugggest you start at the 2 setting and work your way up to your comfort level. It is certainly worth the price as it is really a beautifully constructed razor.
