After 17 years of using cartridge style razors (pull/cut) and being price gouged doing so. I tried my first DE after months of reading reviews. The Progress LH is little heavier than a metal 80's Gillette Atra Plus loaded which is a good thing. Powered G Mach 5, and S Quattro are lighter still and feel like toys.
I found a very comfortable shave for my coarse beard/sensitive skin type that I can adjust for up/down passes, and skin condition. The handle length and weight is not to heavy or cumbersome. The head/blade notch and safety bar alignment were all appeared normal from picture comparisions. Keeping your fingertips in the grooves is essential for a secure grip. It has a low learning curve as the third shave I did a behind the head pass for clean-up along my neckline with additional mirror. The razor does not clog up like a cartridge would with neck hair doing this. DE rinses to clean off; with cartridges you have to work the hair out beating the razor. The blade gap adjustment works well, the more open the blade is the more aggressive (5), and more skin exposed. I've found a 1.5 - 3 works well for up stoke against the grain closeness with little irritation, and 3 - 4 for downstrokes. The adjustment upstroke against grain strokes is where the razor really earns its price tag, and I'm happy that I did not buy the short handle version as this is heavier. I know now what I have been missing, smooth soft skin results and little irritation. Get a razor sampler pack if your a DE newbie like me. I choose a boar brush to start <$ Omega Soap (porasso), and shave secret oil.
People were saying I would cut myself up and this is entirely untrue, perhaps with a cheapo singleblade cartridge but not a quality tool like this.
