After choking on the price of the latest cartridge refills I decided to give the old DE shave method another chance. After all, if I managed to survive the first 15 years of shaving with a DE, surely I could do it again. Since I threw away my old G_ butterfly I needed a new razor. After reading many reviews I decided to try the R89. I am thrilled! The shave is far far better than I expected and a decided improvement over the nuclear cartridge approach.

This razor is the Mona Lisa or razors. It shaves as close as a straight razor. The workmanship of the razor is world class. The finish is beautiful and the cutting geometry perfect, it is a pleasure to own. You won’t go wrong purchasing this razor.

I thought I was mad when I first ordered my Muhle R89 because I already had an Edwin Jagger DE89 and apparently they were the same. When the Muhle R89 arrived in the mail I held the two razors up side by side and they did look similar. I loaded a new Feather blade in it, lathered up with a good wad of Cyril R Salter Rose cream and went to work. The razor felt quite different to the DE89 to shave with. The handle is lighter giving it a better balance. The handle also has a better grip which is important when you have wet hands. The shave was smooth and effortless. After three passes, my face was super smooth. I now use my Muhle R89 as a test bed for razor blades. I know that it's going to give me an excellent and consistent shave so any difference I notice is due to the blade.
