So...My $350 electric razor died after 3 years of use and I did not want to replace it - so then I looked at the cost of refills (especially when I calculated the annualized cost) of my old Mach 3's - OUCH! Worse than razor burn! Then I thought about this little razor that sat on my Dad's sink when I was a kid and I quickly rediscovered the simplicity of a Dovo/Merkur DE Safety razor which then led me to this little beauty. For me it is about simplification - this is the ultimate in simplification with stainless everything. I am now learning to shave with a straight razor and I think this is a great start. Dovo makes a clearly superior product and this was worth the price (by the way Royal Shave was the best price I found...) even if I only have this as a collectible knife or use it. Do yourself a favor and know that "Shave Ready" only means it is very sharp - before you use this, invest in a quality Strop and strop it very well before the first use. I already know that I want to hone it to a yet finer edge once I get used to using a straight razor. Start off with small areas of your face and work with the grain only until you are comfortable with the blade as it is a completely different, yet rewarding experience. I still use my DE for my daily ritual and use the straight on the weekends when I have the extra time to use it. By the way there are 4 Keys to success with wet shaving - Great brush, great soap, great blade and patience - I am very pleased with my first Straight Razor and will come back to buy another full stainless as this is a razor that I will probably hand down to my son. There are lots of really pretty razors, but this one is just so dang practical! I am pretty sure the only maintenance this would need will be the occasional honing and keeping the metal dry. Wood rots and plastic or horn gets brittle. Last time I checked Stainless Steel lasts about 12,000 years. Annualize that! |
