    Maybe Not Dovo's Best, 9.2.2010

This was my first straight razor. I am sure I didn't have my stropping technique right, and of course, my shaving technique was not very good either. But now, many razors and shaves later, I still find this razor never quite measures up to the other Dovo's I have, nor to the vintage razors I own. I sent it for professional honing, and the honemeister even said that it didn't seem up to Dovo's usual high standards.
With a lot of work, I have this razor to the point where I don't dread using it, but I don't use it eagerly either. The Dovo Bismarcks and most other Dovo's are a better choice.

The sharpening and honing of a straight razor takes a cretin amount of skill. Most sharping shops don't know how to properly sharpen a straight razor. The sharping stones will cost you as much as the razor or more. After reading several articles and writings on the topic and practicing what I had read,it took me a full 6 months to be able to sharpen and hone a straight razor properly. I now shave everyday and just strop the razor to bring back the edge. It now seems elementary after you learned the skills required. However, you just can't pull a straight razor out of a box learn to shave with it and learn the sharping skills in a few days. A straight razor is a precision surgical tool and it takes time to acquire the necessary skills to master its use....... If you take the time you will win a life time of shaving pleasure, if not all you will have is a "dull butter knife".
